The Benefit of Ugly Fonts

I recently stumbled across an interview on BBC Radio 4's Today programme that I thought was worth a mention.
Neuroscience blogger Jonah Lehrer explains why ugly fonts and messy handwriting make it easier to remember what you've read. I was always under the assumption that the easier something is to read then the easier it is for people to learn and remember information, but who am I to argue with a neuroscientist!
It did get me thinking though, what effect could this have on the future of graphic design?
